Ruby's Dining Room

In 1922, Alec Ruttger, second generation owner, decided there was need for a larger dining room. At that time, there was only a small dining space, a part of the main house and porches. They set about building the present original section of the log dining hall. Peter Brand was hired to be in charge of construction. Many of the 54-foot poplar logs were cut and skidded from steep hills and hollows three miles north of the resort in the Placid Lake area known as the Devil's Washboard by early natives. Harvesting the timber by hand was dangerous and back-breaking work; those early pioneers recognized true quality and real beauty, and no amount of difficulty would keep them from their tasks. Later, in 1981, a new kitchen was built and the original kitchen was turned into the Colonial Dining Room (later renamed The Cabin Dining Room), and in 1987 the new log dining room was added.

Executive Chef Terry Dox has been with us since 1984. Guests can expect a fine dining experience from Chef Dox and his crew. Order from our menu or join us for a buffet. He carries on the tradition that began in 1898 with Josie (Joe and Josie were the founders of the resort), followed by Bertha and Amy, and now with Chef Dox. Good food is a reputation that continues at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge.
