Forest History Center

Grand Rapids, MN 55744
218-327-4482

Northern Minnesota Resort ActivitiesThe forests of northern Minnesota have had great impact on the lives of their inhabitants for many centuries. This relationship between people and the land has evolved from those who relied on the forests to provide sustenance, through the cutting of forests to provide the timber that helped to build a growing America, to today's recreational escape from our urbanized society. The Forest History Center tells the story of this changing relationship. After the exhibits, visit the logging camp where you'll find the camp blacksmith, saw filer, clerk, cook and lumberjacks. Then, board the moored river "wanigan," a floating cook shack used when the logs and men headed downstream to the mills. After that, take a seat on the porch of a 1930s Minnesota Forest Service patrolman's cabin and lookout tower and hear about the ranger's important work protecting woodland resources. Self-guided forest trails complete the story of life in the northern forests of Minnesota from ancient times to today.

Old Central School
10 NW 5th Street
Grand Rapids, MN 55744
218-326-6431

Grand Rapids MinnesotaIn 1895, the people of Grand Rapids Minnesota decided a new school was needed. The result was a building absolutely unique for northern Minnesota. Central School towers over downtown Grand Rapids. Built in the Richardsonian-Romanesque tradition, Central School exhibits the basic Romanesque features combined with the textural richness and innovative interior common in Richardsonian
architecture.

Central School originally housed all grades, and was known for its academic rigor; students were required to learn the Latin classics - impressive for a tiny northwoods community! In 1908, a new high school was built, but Central School remained in use until the 1970s. In the 1980s, a major renovation was begun.

Today, Old Central School houses the Itasca County Historical Society's Heritage Museum, Auntie Em's Coffee Shop, and specialty shops featuring stained glass, quilts and quilting supplies, treasured gifts, and fancy imported yarns.
